Fitted WNBA, an independent project by artist and historian Hypatia Sorunke, captures the vibrant, diverse attendees of the WNBA for the 2024 Season. The series highlights the intersection of personal expression and collective solidarity, reflecting the power of sports as a platform for social change and identity building.
In centering New York City as a place that helped birth the queer liberation movement and the New York Liberty, they hoped to document the historical resistance of the street-style of NYC, the creativity in self-fashioning, and the generational shift in the WNBA community.
With that in mind, and a desire to bridge their interests in mapping LGBTQIA+ migration patterns, Hypatia set out to attend every NY Liberty Game (over 50 games) for the 2024 Season to build an archive of photos that preserved a part of a national culture that has been existing in the shadows.
